Iconic comedian and controversial social commentator Joan Rivers has passed away.  She was 81-years-old.

River’s daughter officially announced:  “It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. ET surrounded by family and close friends. My son [Cooper] and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.”

Rivers went to have a ‘vocal lift’ performed, a newer procedure many celebrities use to maintain a ‘youthful’ tone in their vocal performances.  Rivers experienced complications during the procedure, forcing her to be rushed to a hospital equipped to deal with her medical case.  It was there that she was placed in a medically induced coma and her family had to make the tough decision to remove her from the coma and life support.

Officials are still investigating the exact cause of Rivers’ demise and also seeking to understand if any degree of medical negligence lead to her death.  Many were shocked by Rivers’ death.  Only days before, she performed before a nice sized crowd in New York.
